We asked our teams what it was like working for the company and what aspirations they have for the future- here’s what some of them had to say…….

Holly is Operations Manager at the Waterloo Site, a Welsh speaker she grew up in Trefriw and still lives in the area

Hi Holly – What was your first role in the company? 

Initially I began in FOH having left a Supervisory role with a previous company, my back ground was always F&B, having briefly worked in retail I very quickly realised that hospitality was the industry for me

What inspired you to develop your career with the company?

I could see the opportunities for progression that were available with the company, and the opportunities to develop skills across different departments. This really drove my ambitions as I could see there was a career path here. The company has very long standing employees and I knew that this meant it was a great place to work right from when I first joined.

Which Industry role models have influenced your career choices ?

Seeing that we are a company with a majority in female leaders was really inspiring and realising that their backgrounds all began like mine was a big influence, it still is today, we are an industry which has a mostly female workforce. The Hospitality industry in general doesn’t have a loud voice in terms of economy for the country, even though it is a huge contributor and provides so many jobs for different people;  I think this is something that will and should change so that there are public faces and role models for the hospitality teams of the future.

What’s a typical day like? 

There is no typical day! It’s a quality of the industry that I really enjoy, it’s not repetitive or autonomous, some days throw real curve balls at you that you weren’t expecting when you left the house for work that morning. There’s administration yes, and there are meetings, there’s a lot of customer interaction with the residents and dining guests which is really lovely and reminds you daily why you do your job when someone has had a great experience form their visit.

What do you love most about working for the company? 

What I love the most is that it’s a family operated business. With these values, it’s not a chain, and you’re not an employee number. I also love that there is no typical day.

What’s been your biggest challenge? 

The pandemic has definitely brought its challenges most recently, however transitioning to my first managerial role brought some too, I loved the challenge though and there was much new skills to learn and quickly as the role was customer facing.

Apart from your extreme organisation skills what type of day-to-day manager are you?

I am very hands on and enjoy the team interaction so not “closed door” at all. I think this style gives a much stronger understanding and insight into what’s needed to operate and keep moving forward.

How do you see your role evolving?

I have the same answer to this as I would have had ten years ago, who knows!? From beginning here I would never have dreamt where it would take me,  I am a firm believer in self development which is something that never stops. We have some very exciting plans for The Waterloo in the future and I’m really looking forward to being part of this next journey.


Sam is a Duty Manager & Receptionist at the Royal Oak, a Welsh speaker she’s just completed a NVQ Front of House Reception whilst juggling homeschooling and part-time farming!

What did you want to do when you were ‘grown up’?

I wanted to be in the police force or Navy as a child.

When did you join the company? 

I joined Team Oak August 2020.

What inspired you to develop your career with the company?

The Oak has inspired me to develop myself by offering all the support, training and development tools I need to grow in my role.  

Who’s been your mentor during your time with us so far? 

Lucy (Head of Reservations) has been and excellent mentor since I joined the team. 

What’s a typical day like?

A typical day for me is usually very busy with telephone calls and emails. We have very little face to face contact with guests due to covid, I’m looking forward to having more face to face interaction in the future. 

What do you love most about working here?

What I love most about the company is their loyalty towards their staff and feeling appreciated. 

What’s been your biggest challenge so far?

My biggest challenge so far has been joining the Oak during a pandemic. It’s been stop and start a lot which has been difficult whilst trying to settle into a new environment but I have been given the support to get through the difficult days. 

What training and development have you undertaken since joining?

I have been given online new employee training from HR before starting my employment, I’ve just received up to date covid training and I’m attending a course on Friday. 

How do you see your role evolving?

I see myself continuing to work hard for the company and being a positive role model within the team and continue gaining qualifications in the future through Llandrillo College to improve my skills and knowledge further. 


Nik works as part of the Maintenance Team, he loves the outdoors and camping and often takes the family away on random trips in their camper van

Hi Nik – What did you do before you joined us?

I worked as a car mechanic, then at Asda and then at Conwy Council working with adults with learning difficulties 

What’s a typical day on maintenance like? 

I work 9-5 doing general maintenance across all the sites. We can do a range of things including tiling & grouting, plumbing and painting. We’ve been very busy recently making sure everything is covid compliant and that we keep everyone safe

What do you love most about working for the company? 

I love the variety of the jobs we do, everyone is really friendly and it very much feels like a family. Everybody is there for each other and it really feels like we’re a team reaching for the same goals. 

What’s been your biggest challenges far? 

Learning where everything is and updating my skills and knowledge

Who’s been your mentor during your role with us so far?

Both Graham and Luke were fantastic when I first joined, they guided me and helped me improve my skills and I’ve gained a lot of knowledge from them.  

What training and development have you undertaken since joining the company?

I’ve done a variety of things including a Working at Height Course, undertaken a Painting and Decorating NVQ and Ive recently completed a level 2 ILM in Management development. 

How do you see your role evolving?

I’d like to take on more responsibilities and look at a future management role. For the time being I want to continue improving my skills and knowledge
