Holly went walking

A lake in the forest, nestled 200m above Betws-Y-Coed, Llyn Elsi is one of the walks you can embark on straight from our front door (no vehicle access required for this one and kudos for reducing your carbon footprint!)

Llyn Elsi was once two lakes, however in 1914 Lord Ancaster allowed the building of the damn merging the lakes into a reservoir supplying Betws-Y-Coed with drinking water.  From start to finish back to the hotel the walk takes about 2 and a half hours – although I ambled around the lake taking in the Autumn reflections so was a little over schedule! Wales’ Plastic Free Future

With Visit Wales’  Year Of The Sea underway it brings to mind the topic that’s high on everyones agenda at the moment…………. single use plastic.  #PlasticFreeSnowdonia is a campaign pioneered and launched this year by the outdoor adventure company Breese Adventures who are based here in Betws-y-Coed.

The aim is to bring together local tourism businesses who want to see less plastic used (and discarded) in one of the most beautiful areas of the UK, and in turn helping them raise awareness with all the guests who stay or visit North Wales the damaging effects that single use plastic has in the environment. Our first BespOak event! Combining the skills of catering manager Paul Adams and Head Chef Sam Plester and their two passions-  travel and food we bring you our first Pop Up event on the 11th May 2018…

Sam’s travels across Vietnam, India, Cambodia and Thailand have introduced her to new flavours and subtle spicy nuances. She first encountered street food in Bangkok on a stopover enroute to Australia. So enamoured with new ingredients and ways of cooking she’s spent the past five Januaries heading back out to Asia and creating her own spice trail…   Combine that with Paul’s love of the avant garde and they’ve developed an eight course street food tasting menu with a dash of theatre thrown in… Continue reading “Fortune favours and Asian flavours”

Wild Horses and their Stables…

So after an absence of a year and much feedback from the powers that be (you guys) the Stables Lodge is back!

All the industry research in 2016 pointed to the fact that guests wanted more hotel facilities with their rooms, more room service, more leisure options, more enhanced room features so we set to task upgrading our room packages, adding in service levels and bringing the lodge rooms into the main hotel portfolio… and then what happened was you guys told us you it wasn’t more room facility you wanted but more choice – and you missed the flexibility of our room only rate!

Wales in Love

Love is in the air…… If you’re in Wales on 25 January, then St Dwynwen’s Day, is the date we honour our Welsh patron saint of lovers. It’s our very own version of St Valentine’s Day – we’re celebrating both days here at the Oak (being such old romantics we can’t help it…)

So who was St Dwynwen we hear you ask….

Our Catering Manager, Paul, has just made us taste test the most Christmassy of treats (it’s a hard job but someone’s got to do it)…
